The Amazon pink river dolphin (freshwater dolphin) or “Bolivian Bufeo” (Inia Boliviensis) has been declared Bolivia’s Natural Heritage. This fact is considered essential for the implementation of conservation of this endemic species of Bolivia. in 2012 the Society for Marine Mammalogy. began considering the Bolivian Amazon pink river dolphin (Inia boliviensis) as a full species.
The Bolivian Amazon is an ecological paradise with over 2.000 species of plants, 46 species of mammals, 350 species of fish, 218 species of birds, 13 species of reptiles, 28 species of amphibians and 175 species of butterflies.
Ruta Verde offers you an Amazon pink river dolphin tour and walks in the Amazon jungle which will take you to the heart of Bolivia ‘s greatest wilderness area. In the beautiful and dynamic Amazon nature you can witness a great variety of animals. It will not be difficult to see crocodiles, capybaras (biggest rodent on earth), turtles and many birds like macaws (parabas), toucans, herons and hummingbirds. And although they can be shy, Amazon pink river dolphins (bufeos, Inia Boliviensis) spotting is almost guaranteed here. The fresh water pink river dolphins are the star attraction of this area. How much you’ll see of them – and whether they’ll jump out of the water, swim along and even stay for a while playing – depends on patience and a bit of luck. You can also take a refreshing dive in the river.
In the 16th century, the Spanish tried to find ‘ El Dorado ‘ in this area, a mystical city or country of unimaginable wealth.
REFERENCE PROGRAM
START: Departure from Santa Cruz to Trinidad by comfortable night bus/airplane. In Trinidad the guide will pick you up from the bus terminal/airport.
We will pick you up from your hotel and we will head off to ¨Puerto Ballivian” or “Loma Suarez” (8 km from Trinidad). We will board a motorboat (with roof and hammocks) and we will begin the trip on the Ibare river (river of the birds). Along the way we can admire the big centenary “mapajo” tree, home of many “batos” birds. We will have our first stop to have a short walk.
We continue the navigation until we get to the river mouth of the “Mamoré” (“Mother river”) where we will be able to spot the star attraction of our tour: the freshwater dolphins also called ¨bufeos¨ (Amazon pink river dolphin), swimming around our boat. There are macaws, toucans and many other kind of birds and other animals all the way long in the water. It is very common to spot crocodiles, capybaras and river turtles at the riverside enjoying the sun.
Lunch.
In the afternoon another walk through jungle trails and we will head back to ¨Puerto Ballivian. Transfer back to Trinidad.
